Featuring Rhinestone, Lyanna,Rux and Skyla
Late Winter, Year 759
Silverwood, Silverthorne

Skyla

Night, Skyla liked the night. It hid her dark coat almost perfectly and no one was awake to call her names. Darkling, Mudblood, Waterbaby and so on, only one of those names was true but they couldn’t say any of them at night.

The young filly had been feeling uncomfortable since Autumn started. Her mother had suddenly come home with a red stag who guided them to another place in the Vale near the woods where two other does were waiting. Her mother had called it a ‘harem’ apparently many stags kept one, from what she understood a harem was a group of does who had fawns from the same stag. Skyla didn’t get it at first since Lyanna had said her father had been a darkling just like herself but as winter came closer everything started to click. Her mother and the other does became rounder, it didn’t take long for her to understand that they each had a fawn in their bellies. Now Skyla didn’t mind having a sibling, it might even be fun, but she was not used to being in a group even if the only other fawn in it didn’t talk to her. The stag, Rhinestone, made her a little uneasy too. He was respectful to her mother and all but something seemed off about him for some reason.

A few days in winter and the feeling hadn’t passed at all. So tonight she had sneaked away from the harem to have some alone time, maybe it was just the habit of being just her and her mother; obviously she planned to go back, her mom will be worried if she didn’t. Besides she wasn’t completely alone, Luan was with her.

The darkling hopped her way into the woods and stopped, welcoming the familiar scents of the trees being so close together and the feeling of closeness and safety. Luan had followed her into the woods and was watching her from the long branches of the trees, Skyla sometimes wondered if she followed everyone who moved at night. However, her moment of peace was cut short by a small, almost inaudible, noise behind her.

“ Hello?” she asked into the shadows, her ears perking and her nose twitching.

A humid familiar scent soon filled her nostrils, one that did not bring back happy memories.

Lyanna

It had been a whole season since she had allowed Rhinestone to take her and her daughter to his harem. Lyanna had always been curious what it was like to be in a harem with other does, honestly it wasn’t too bad. Jade didn’t say or do much, Nimia was a young doe who, much like herself, wished for freedom except that her situation was much worse that Lyanna’s; there was also a little filly, Nessarose, she didn’t talk much and preferred to keep to herself like her mother, Lyanna had tried to make Skyla become friends with her to no avail. Yet even with these cons life in a harem was a lot more interesting than staying in the Vale or her clearing. And with her current state it was best to be in a group.

The buckskin was now laying down near the woods, a small pyre near her to ward off the cold winter air. All three does might like to be near each other for safety but they all needed some personal space from time to time, especially when the mood-swings started to settle in. Lyanna didn’t remember Skyla feeling this heavy when she had been pregnant with her, she wondered why this babe felt heavier… still it did not kick near as much as her first fawn had.
The young mother allowed herself to let out a sigh when the winds changed and a familiar scent came to her.

“What do you want? Rhinestone” she asked lightly without looking behind her or getting up from her place.

The stag had gotten a little more protective over the does as their bellies swelled more each day so it didn’t surprise her that he had come to check on her, in fact it made her a little happy. Still she had finally gotten herself in a comfortable position where the unborn fawn would not kick her and she was not about to give up this comfort unless it was truly necessary.

Rux

Everything had changed in the past year… The fawntakers no longer needed to steal the Oathbreaker fawns and drag them into the depths of the Oakfern caverns and then to the shamans who awaited them. From there on out the shamans commenced with the sacrifices of the Oathbreakers and Gealach became a pleased God once again.

But, now there were no sacrifices. The fawntakers no longer took the fawns, because…. Because their Oracle was dead. Mindelan was dead… Now that Oakfern had lost its Oracle everything just seemed to come to a dead halt. They had to wait to proceed with the taking of fawns until a new Oracle was announced… that was what Nazam had said.

So Rux was left without her passion… She couldn’t do her job anymore.

She’d come out here tonight to take a walk on the wild side-Silverthorne- just to clear her head and see if she could find any sort of mischief or excitement to get herself into. So far she’d found nothing… Not even any fawnlings stirring about in the night. That was a shame, she really wouldn’t mind a good fight.

Letting out a soft sigh, the mahogany bay doe came to a halt, big ears flicking about as she listened…. Listened for anything. Just some little thing to spike her interest.. Anything would do.

That’s when the sound of small hooves crashing through the brush caught her attention. The mahogany bay doe’s ears flicked back, a grin plastering itself onto her small face. She let out a small sound of amusement… The fawn stopped, now in the Oakfern doe’s vision, it’s ears flicking about. “Hello?” the doeling called out. She must have good ears if she’d heard Rux! Or, maybe she had just felt the doe’s presence.

“Hello.” Rux called in return though she still stayed very well hidden, her eyes flitting to the conveniently-placed stream to the fawn’s left.Well, she couldn’t take the fawn back to the caverns to have it sacrificed… But, nobody had said she couldn’t kill it,just for the heck of it!

Rhinestone

Winter was reaching an end. He’d gathered all the does that he could and now five bore his fawns. He was excited to see the fawns that would be coming in spring and summer. These were his first fawns, he’d never sired any others… He’d never wanted to. But, that had changed this year. Would he be a good father? He wasn’t sure. Probably not, but he’d try his best.

He’d been wandering around tonight aimlessly, not sure where he was going, but just allowing his legs to take him there. He simply wandered about the Silverwood, enjoying the cold night. It wasn’t snowing, but it was still very cold. He could see his breath billow out before him and the cold air burned his nostrils when he inhaled. Steam from his body rose in the air. He’d been walking for a while, so he didn’t feel very cold and, in fact, he’d broken out in a sweat.

Now, he’d returned to his harem, going to check on everyone and see how they were. He’d come to Lyanna now, his last stop. She was laying down, resting. The pregnancy must be taking a bit of a toll on her.

“I was just coming to check on you and see how you’re doing.” he said, stopping in front of her then lowering himself down the ground, shuddering slightly now as he nestled himself into the chilly snow.

Skyla

‘Hello’

A voice called out after her own. Skyla looked around for its source but whoever had said it was still hiding from her. Again the filly sniffed the air, the smell was still there and it was close. She couldn’t fight, and her mom probably hadn’t noticed her leaving, the buckskin seemed to have a lot of things on her mind lately and Skyla had found it easier to sneak away.
Knowing to always trust her gut the darkling took a slow step back, then another. Her reddish brown eyes kept darting around her for any movement, if she bolted now she should be able to reach her mother and safety.

Lyanna

The young mother made a ‘hhmming’ sound as the red stag lowered himself in front of her.

“Heavy” she answered, then realized that it didn’t make much sense “This fawn feels different compared to my first pregnancy, I’m not sure how, it feels heavier or bigger…I’m not sure...but i know the birth will be soon” Lyanna remembered the changing feelings before Skyla was born, back then she had thought it was normal but then they became more common until a month later the filly had decided it was time to see the world, this fawn would come soon in Spring...she just hoped it wouldn’t come sooner than that.

“How are the others?” she paused for a second to shift a little, earning her a small kick from inside her belly “How are you?”

Rux

The little doe watched the Oathbreaker fawn’s every move, wondering what she’d do next. Did she have any clue of what danger she was in? Did she have an instinct that was screaming at her to run way, that something was dreadfully wrong??

“What’s your name?” The mahogany doe called out again, in a high-pitched, fawn-like voice. She was trying her best to sound like another fawn, perhaps even a newborn. Being as small as she was, it was going pretty well. Nobody would know her from a newborn by voice, or by appearance, really, if she didn’t wear her paint. But, she was wearing it right now so that wouldn’t work here.

Now she noticed that the dark filly was beginning to back up, one step at a time, very slowly. So, her instinct was telling her something. Pity. The fun wouldn’t last nearly as long.

The doe stepped out from the darkness now, although the doeling wouldn’t be able to see her very well. She was determined to continue tinkering with the young fawn, as long as she could.

“My name is Rux.” she said, still in that high-pitched voice which was pretty damn eerie when you think about it.

Rhinestone

A flicker of confusion flashed across the red stag’s face. Heavy? What was that supposed to mean? She answered his mental question right after she’d thought it anyways.

“Oh, that makes sense.” he said, more to himself than to the buckskin doe before him. “Maybe this fawn will be of a heavier build?” he stated simply, ears flicking back slightly. “I’m still very curious to whether it’s going to be a hind or a hart.” he smiled slightly. He seemed happiest when talking about his children.

There seemed to be a different, saddened air about him recently, however. He wouldn’t tell what had caused it or what was going on. He was not what you’d call easy to read, he was in fact VERY hard to read, when he wanted to be.

The red stag’s ears flicked back again. “Speaking of Skyla, where is she?” It was easy to say that he had grown the slightest bit of affection for the dark young hind, though she didn’t seem to care about him in the least. In fact, it was possible that she even disliked him. Wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, that’s for sure.

Skyla

A sudden high-pitched voice came from nowhere now. It sounded like a little fawn but at the same time it didn’t. This was creepy. Still what if she was backing away towards that thing? What if it really was a fawn?

“Come out, come out and perhaps I’ll tell you” she answered in a slightly sing-song voice, her mouth instantly growing into a dark grin as she kept looking around for any movement.

If this was a trick then she will run, if not then maybe she could take the lost fawn to the harem.

Lyanna

Lyanna smiled slightly as Rhinestone’s mood lightened, he had been a little gloomy lately.

“Perhaps” then he asked about the fawn’s gender “Hmmm, maybe it feels heavy because it might be a boy. Who knows?”

A boy, it would be nice to have a boy since she already had a daughter. Then Rhinestone asked a question that sounded silly for just one second.

“She’s….” the doe looked around her and reality crashed into her.

She was silent for one minute before she swore so loudly the the 5 gods probably heard it loud and clear and got to her feet. Once she had gained her balance back a puff of smoke came out of her nostrils. Stupid, stupid, stupid, she had been noticing that her attention span had been lowering as her belly grew but this was ridiculous.

“I have lost her” she said simply, though in her mind she was preparing a good punishment for her daughter as well as a lecture for herself. “I can’t believe this, I knew i as having trouble focusing on things around me since this baby started to grow and yet i didn’t do anything about it.”

She muttered this for another minute before turning to Rhine. “Help me find her?” her voice held no anger, it had gotten hard to get angry but a hint of irritation at herself and her daughter could probably be heard by the bay stag.

Rux

“I have come out.” the little Oakfern doe giggled, still in that high-pitched voice of hers. “You just can’t see me very well.” she took another step forwards, snow crunching beneath her feet. Ugh… Snow might be a form of water, which she adored, but she still didn’t like it. She didn’t like the cold. She shuddered slightly and took one more step forwards.

She wondered if the dark Silverthorne filly would see thTrhe blue ring of paint upon her forehead. The paint had dulled some, she hadn’t replenished it in a while, so the fawn might not see it.

“I bet you get picked on a lot, don’t you?” she questioned the dark fawn. She’d been around long enough and had observed the Silverthornes enough to know some things about them. She knew that those of golden pelt were thought as descendants of their Gods, like the pale princesses of Glenmore, and that light coats were also cherished… But, dark coats were severely frowned upon and those who bore one were often thought of as having tainted blood, perhaps having a Blackwood sire.

Rhinestone

Rhine watched the buckskin doe closely as she turned her head towards where she thought Skyla was… Only to be surprised that she wasn’t there. It was pretty obvious that she hadn’t known that her dark filly had scuttled off.

The silver blood bay stag’s ears flicked forwards with surprise as the doe swore loudly and vehemently. Woah, he hadn’t expected a lady-like doe such as Lyanna to swear like that! It made him let out a small chuckle of amusement.

“Of course I’ll help you find your daughter.” he said, long tail flicking, silvery hair whisking about. “Surely she hasn’t wandered off too far.” he lifted his head, taking in a deep breath. He could smell the filly. He turned, beginning to lead the doe into the direction that her daughter had gone off to.

Skyla

‘I have come out’

Skyla squinted at this as she looked around until her eyes found a small shadow near some bushes. The shadow was small, and the fawnling was probably of a lighter color compared to hers. After staring at the shadow for a minute she could faintly see a blue-ish glow by the head. Oakfern, just like those three that she had seen back in the spring.

“Yes” she answered slowly “But I would rather be picked on another day”

With that Skyla turned sharply and bolted towards the way she knew her mother was. The last Oakfern she had met hadn’t hurt her but she had long learned that not everyone is nice in this world.

Lyanna

“I sure hope so” she muttered and let herself be led by the blood bay stag.

After so long she had forgotten just how annoying it was to be pregnant, it seemed to change from doe to doe but it made her too helpless without her even knowing.
The buckskin sniffed the air, yes she could smell her daughter’s scent...and something else...what was so familiar about this scent?

Rux

“Oh no you don’t!” Rux shouted out loud, though she didn’t move at all. She didn’t have to. The water from the little stream rose and warped, darting out towards the filly and forming a solid wall before her. It would break if the filly were to continue charging through it, but Rux was hoping that it would be enough to spook her and make her wheel back. That’s when she’d fall into the trap, going closer to the stream and Rux would be upon her in a second.

Rhinestone

The dark stag tensed, almost at the same time that Lyanna had picked up the scent. He had smelt this scent before; he recognized it. It belonged to an Oakfern that he’d encountered on occasion; one of those damned fawntakers. This couldn’t be good.

“We have to hurry.”: he said, looking at Lyanna. “You probably shouldn’t be running, I can go on ahead, we’re not far. She’d didn’t go very far.” There was some worry in his eyes and dread in his heart. Would they be too late?

Skyla

Skyla slid to a stop just as a wall of water formed before her. Maybe if she kept going she could escape, but Oakferns controlled water so wouldn’t walking into the water be dangerous? The darkling stepped back, some of her feathers brushing against the surface of a small lake. Her head darted back at the feeling and her eyes widened. Taking a fast, deep breath she turned again, hoping she would be fast enough before the Oakfern used the lake.

Lyanna

The worried look Rhinestone got answered her question.

“Oakfern” she said almost hatefully, the last time she had met an Oakfern she had been knocked unconscious but thankfully her daughter had been left untouched, this wasn’t the same Oakfern and she wasn’t about to take any chances.

“That’s my daughter, Rhinestone, no filthy midget is going to take my daughter from me” she glared at the stag before heading towards her daughter’s scent. Her magic wouldn’t help her but that Oakfern better pray to their heathen god that she didn’t manage to get her hooves on it. She looked back at the stag, expecting him to follow, before moving again. She wasn’t running, it was too hard to run, but she was taking long steps that were almost a canter and luckily it was working.

Rux

Rux’s expression turned from a smug smirk into a malicious, devilish grin as she gathered her magic about her then let it soar, creating a large wave, which swept over the filly, dragging her into the deep parts of the creek.

The mahogany bay doe strode forwards, her steps graceful, her head lifted high with pride. She would rid the world of one last Oathbreaker fawn tonight.

She stopped as her little cloven hooves touched the water’s surface. She continued to focus, not allowing her concentration to break as she held the dark filly under water, depriving her of air. After a few moments, when she thought the filly might pass out, she brought her back up, allowing her some oxygen. She definitely didn’t want the game to end so soon!!! Plus, it would be truly delightful to watch the Silverthorne filly suffer, under the guidance and the light of Gealach.

Rhinestone

Rhine let out a soft snort at the buckskin doe. “I wasn’t saying that they were!” he exclaimed defensively. “I was only saying that I was going to go on ahead to make sure we aren’t too late!” his voice had risen an octave with stress and defensiveness, making his voice a bit high-pitched.

He hesitated, not going on ahead of her yet. There was nothing worse than the wrath of a pregnant doe who did not get her way… He wasn’t going to risk making Lyanna angry, especially when it came to her daughter. He didn’t feel like getting fussed at today.

Skyla

Cold, Skyla didn’t like this cold. Her vision had become blurry and no matter which way she moved it was as if hundreds of strong vines were holding her under. It didn’t take long for her chest to start to hurt, the longer she was kept there the more it hurt until it was almost burning. What was happening?!
She opened her little muzzle but no words came out, only bubbles that rose to the surface, leaving the fawn that had made them behind. Water entered through her nostrils and mouth in that same second and her whole body felt heavy, her chest hurt so much she wanted to cry and her head felt weird as she started getting dizzy. Her movements started to slow down even though she wanted to keep trying, she wanted to bleat for her mother, she didn’t want to burn anymore, she wanted the pain to stop, but her limbs wouldn’t listen and the pain only got worse until the filly just stopped trying.
Darkness had been so close to taking her out of this nightmare, oh sweet darkness, but then she felt a numb push on her back and something told her she was being pulled up. Then the water stopped, her head broke through the surface and she instinctively took in a big breath of air. Why? She was not being kept inside the lake anymore so why did it still burn? Why was she so dizzy? Instinct took over the small darkling and she again started to fight against the water to try and get to solid ground even though she had no idea where she was going, or that her chest and limbs still felt heavy. She just wanted to get out.

Lyanna

Lyanna looked back as Rhinestone’s voice took a, strangely high-pitched, defensive tone and gave him a small glare. He was being too slow. Once he got close enough she wrapped her tail around his neck and pulled him along. She could apologize later when she knew her daughter was safe.
When the trees finally started to stop Lyanna saw a small figure with a blurry blue-ish glow on its head near a small lake. And in that lake a familiar silhouette was trying to find a way out of the water.

“Oakfern!” she snapped at the small figure near the lake and she let go of Rhinestone to walk angrily towards the fawn-taker, her eyes flashing an angry hot orange that had never appeared before even when she used fire magic. Without thinking, she concentrated on a small stick near the pygmy’s leg and set it on fire like she had learned in her magic training. The stick will go out on it’s own if left alone for a few minutes, but the fawn-taker doesn’t need to know that.

“Let go of my daughter before I burn you to oblivion!” of course, even when her daughter was out of the lake Lyanna will still try to crush that little murderer’s skull under her hooves, with this in mind she kept advancing.

Rux

Rux snickered as she gazed at the flailing, drowning fawn. She could only imagine how she felt. The burning of her lungs, the weight of her limbs as she desperately fought the water that imprisoned her. She grinned darkly, opening her mouth to call out to the fawn as she allowed her a breather, but was cut off by the voice of another…

She tensed almost immediately, whirling in that direction to find two Silverthornes.approaching. The one in front was a heavily pregnant buckskin doe and the one right beside her was… Wait, she knew him.

The Oakfern doe’s muzzle quirked into a big grin as she looked at the two fire-wielders. So the buckskin was the dark fawn’s mother. That made sense. That’s when fire ignited at the doe’s feet. Letting out a small squeal of alarm, the doe bounced out of the way of the fire, eyes wide.

She let out a exhaled hissing sound of frustration, her concentration slipping from the dark fawn that fought for her life in the water, to the two Silverthornes before her

“Fancy running into you again, Rhinestone.” she purred. “And very nice to meet your little girly-friend.” her attention turned to Lyanna now. “I’m pretty sure I could run away from you, fatty.” she giggled in a high-pitched voice.

Rhinestone

Rhine let out a strangled yelping sound as the doe’s limber tail wrapped around his neck and Lyanna ensued to drag him along rapidly. He let out another groan of complaint, but followed her pace none-the-less.

When the reached the clearing he was not surprised by what he saw. Skyla was but a dark form, floundering in the water as she desperately tried to free herself and get more oxygen. A mahogany bay doe, the same one he’d run into years and years ago, was standing with her back to them, facing the deep-watered creek that she was drowning her victim in.

She turned when Lyanna called out to her, then jumped with alarm as the twig her hoof had been on caught on fire.  That’s when she started talking.

Her eyes were on Rhine as she told him how delighted she was to run into him again, before going to Lyanna to thoroughly insult her. His ears were pinned and he said nothing at first, figuring Lyanna would only cut him off anyways with her outrage.

Skyla

She was about to give up again, her body felt heavy and her limbs hurt. But a familiar voice almost echoed in her ears, a voice she has known since birth.

“Momma?”

Skyla looked around until her eyes landed on her mother. She looked angry, she sounded angry. Rhinestone was also there though he kept his distance, Skyla understood, her mom could be a little scary when she was angry.
The darkling didn’t even try to listen to their conversation with the Oakfern, she just started swimming to her mother, towards safety, ignoring everything else. She was breathing heavily now as she swam, she felt tired and her head felt heavy and she could barely think straight, but she wanted to get to her mom, she didn’t want to fall asleep yet.

Lyanna

Lyanna couldn’t help but smirk as the Oakfern squealed as the flames licked her hooves. Then her eyes wandered towards her fawn again. Skyla was now slowly swimming towards her and Rhinestone, she had to stop herself from running to her fawn who looked so dangerously tired, but she needed to keep this murderer at bay.

“I expect a good explanation as to why you know this poor excuse for a doe later, Rhinestone” she said and coldly glanced at the red stag behind her as she heard the Oakfern talk to him. She wanted to say something else, oh did she want to say something else, but the fawn in her belly will probably kick her again if she said the words that were dancing in her head.

Then she turned back to the fawn-taker, some smoke coming out of her nostrils as she exhaled angrily and connected to the little dying flames that were left by the stick. Instantly the flames floated and multiplied until a big fire eagle formed, and she sent it flying towards the Oakfern.

‘Let her burn’ she thought angrily, thinking of how many other fawns this doe and her herd had killed, how many mothers had cried for revenge once they found their fawn lost with the scent of water on their behalf, how many fathers had become soldiers just to kill these murderers. ‘Let her pay’

Unfortunately the eagle never got to its target. The small fawn in Lyanna’s belly kicked her at the last minute and broke her concentration, the eagle disappearing with it. Yet the eagle had gotten so close to the Oakfern’s face, even if it didn’t burn her the sudden heat was sure to spook her . If it didn’t then Lyanna will just keep trying until nothing but ashes were left of her.

Rux

Rux snickered hatefully at the buckskin doe, her long tail flicking about her hindlegs. What a stupid doe. If she wasn’t careful she was going to set the woods on fire. That wouldn’t be good for any of them, now would it? “Careful with that fire, dear.” she purred silkily. “You’re going to set the Silverwood on fire!”

She glanced towards Rhine again, the snicker turning into a big grin. Uh-oh, looked like she’d gotten him into some trouble. Not that she really cared what trouble the stag got into anyways.

She turned her head, glancing at the dark fawn that struggled in the water. Another twisted smirk flashed across her face and she forced the filly’s head to bob down again. This time she had every intention to hold her under until the bubbles stopped rising… Until she started to float and bob on the surface of the water.

Rux glanced at the moon, now noticing how it shone down upon the filly’s struggling form. She winced slightly as the image of her own fawn, bobbing lifelessly in a pool of water, flashed across her mind.

That was when there was a sudden wooshing, hissing sound… Flames. The mahogany bay doe’s head snapped around and her eyes grew huge as the flames come at her in the shape of a giant bird. She let out a small scream, whirling to try and get away. Thankfully, Gealach was watching out for her, the bird of flame didn’t reach her, it died out.

That’s when Rhinestone made a move. He charged at her, quickly covering the ground between them. She turned and bolted, trying to get away, but didn’t even make it acorss the little clearing before he caught her, fore-hooves whipping out and knocking her hindlegs out from under her. She fell with a thud, the dark stag now looming over her.

Fear flashed in her eyes. “You wouldn’t hurt a pregnant doe would you?” her voice came out as a whimper. “Certainly not an old friend.” She noticed the stag’s ears flicked back, watched him hesitate. He didn’t notice the patch of water boiling to the side of them, little bubbles rising to the top then bursting.

The doe continued to gaze at him with fear. His ears flicked about and then he let out a low huff, backing off of her and stepping away. “Get out of here.” he hissed at her. “If I see you here again I will kill you.”

The water lifted off the ground, and then she flung it at him. The small patch splashed against his face with a soft sizzle. The stag’s reaction was immediate. He let out a howl of pain, whirling away from her, shaking his head violently against the pain.

Only upon seeing the pain she’d inflicted did the mahogany bay doe scramble to her feet and bolt to home.

Rhinestone

The pain was horrid, though he was certain that only a patch of his face had been burnt, and that the water wasn’t quite as hot as it could have been. But, it didn’t matter. Both the shock and the pain had sent him reeling, howling in fury and pain.

He didn’t have time to chase the damned pygmy down, too busy with thrashing about, head shaking violently as he tried to get the water off. As soon as it’d hit him it’d slipped from the boiling point, but it’d done it’s damage. He had no way of knowing how bad it was yet, but he didn’t care.

He whirled back around, eyes livid. He caught a fleeting glimpse of the pygmy’s fleeting form and gathered all of the anger and pain inside him, transforming it into fire, and attempting to throw it at her. It didn’t hit her-didn’t even get close- and she made her escape.

Skyla

Skyla had been close to the lake’s small shore, her hooves brushing against the wet earth under her, when something suddenly pulled her back in the water. The moment her head was back under the water started pulling her back deeper into the lake and she began to thrash around, probably even stronger than before. It only lasted a few seconds, the water stopped pulling at her and she broke back into the surface with a gasp and swam to the shore as fast as she could.

When she was finally on solid ground the young hind ran to her mother and away from the lake, afraid that it will try to pull her back in even when she wasn’t touching the water. Then a scream filled the air, followed by a shout from her mother. It felt like ages when she finally turned her head to look at the trashing red stag and the fleeing shadow in front of him.
Skyla felt her mother leave her side then, trotting over to see if Rhinestone was ok. Again time seemed to slow down for her as she looked back at the lake, a cold shiver ran through her spine and she realized she was trembling. The lake seemed to flick innocently at her, Luan lighting the calming waters, somehow the sight reminded her of a fawn that was apologizing sheeply after playing too roughly with a friend. The darkling let out a shaky breath and walked towards the two adults, tucking herself by her mother’s belly still staring at the lake. A small kick came from the buckskin’s stomach and Skyla leaned into it, feeling like the her unborn sibling was trying to soothe her even though him or her hadn’t seen what had happened.

Lyanna

Rhinestone charged at the Oakfern the moment her flames had died out. She saw him knock the doe to the floor, and her nostrils flared when the little midget tried to talk her way out of it. Pregnant? even if she was she probably wouldn’t care for the fawn, heck it wouldn’t surprise her if she drowned the fawn the moment it was born.

Suddenly she felt something push lightly against her and she looked down to see Skyla near her legs, safe but shivering and looking at the lake as if hypnotised. Lyanna went to wrap her tail around her fawn, she wanted to soothe her, she was safe now. But Rhinestone’s sudden scream made her look back, she turned just in time to see the boiling water hit the stag’s face and the murderer’s silhouette disappear into the trees.

“Rhinestone!” she rushed to him, the fire they had used was long gone now, dead without an energy source “Let me see”

She kept her voice calm, she wasn’t an expert in these kind of situations but freaking out always made things worse. When the stag slowed his movements enough for her to look at the injury she let out a sigh. The injury had burned off some hair and some skin but it didn’t look bad or lethal.

“Relax, you big baby, we take you to a herbalist and you’ll be back on your hooves in no time” she said lightly, her voice filled with relief before she started to lick the wound.

The young mother felt Skyla tuck into her stomach again and she looked at the dark fawn. Skyla was still staring at the water, still shivering, and her breath came out in small huffs as he inner fire tried to warm her. Lyanna’s ear twitched as the fawn in her belly kicked the side were Skyla’s shoulder was and she couldn’t help but smile, she could deal with any other Oakfern that came her way later, right now she was happy no one had gotten hurt.

Rhinestone

Rhine glared at her vehemently, still shaking his head lightly. “I am not a big baby.” he grumbled at her, looking away from her, ears narrowed. He’d over-reacted a bit, but still that definitely hadn’t felt good. It still burned, stung, and generally hurt like hell, but it could’ve been a lot worse.

Some stream of blood trickled from the center of the burn, dripping down off of his chin to the ground. Rhine didn’t notice, he was too busy glaring in the direction that the Oakfern doe had run off in.

Letting out a low snort, the stag turned his head. “Come on, let’s go back home and start a fire to warm your girl up.” he glanced down at Skyla, studying her for a moment to make sure that she was generally ok. “She could get hypothermia if we aren’t careful or go into shock. So we better move.” He turned, beginning to lead the way.

Lyanna

The young doe quirked an eyebrow as the red stag glared at her. The glare did nothing to intimidate her and the look she gave him showed it. At his words she looked down at Skyla, she was still looking silently at the small lake.

“Yes”she said with a nod “Let’s go”

Lyanna brought her head down to Skyla’s muzzle and gently nudged her back to the area where she had been, the small fire was probably out by now. Out of the corner of her eyes she could see Rhinestone following them, his ears alert in case other Oakferns were nearby. Her eyes kept wandering to his burned face, first thing in the morning she will take him to a herbalist to look at those burn even if she had to pull him again.
When they finally got to the spot they had been in Lyanna lay down, with Skyla instantly tucking herself near her belly, and wrapped her tail around the dark fawn.

“Thank you”she said quietly to Rhinestone, and Skyla looked up at him and nodded, unable to form words at the moment.

Rhinestone

Rhine followed after the mother and daughter quietly, his hoofsteps barely audible upon the ground. He said nothing as he followed them, merely looking around, ears flicking forwards, backwards, and around as he listened to the sound of the forest at night. He wasn’t completely convinced that Rux had given up so easily. That damned doe was determined… She’d almost won this night.. They’d almost lost Skyla..

Rhine’s rich brown eyes wandered to the ambling, shivering form of the dark filly by Lyanna’s buckskin side. He had grown fond of the youngster… To think of losing her, especially in such a horrid way, was unthinkable.

As soon as they made it back to the den he stopped, watching the two as they laid down and curled up together. He turned his attention onto a spot before them, connecting with his fiery magic, and lighting it on fire. It’d keep them warm, especially little Skyla.

With a low grunt, the tall stag lowered himself down beside the filly and Lyanna, lowering his head, careful not to gouge someone with his rack, and touched his nose to the filly’s cold, slick hide. She was colder than her thought she’d be.

The dark stag hesitated then lowered his head more, starting to lick at the dark fawn gently, ruffing her fur up backwards to get her to warm up. His dark brown eyes remained on Lyanna, to make sure she wasn’t going to bite his head off due to his actions.

Lyanna

After they had laid down Rhinestone finally seemed to relax and re-lit the fire that Lyanna had been using moments before. Warmth instantly washed over her and it was only then that she noticed just how tense she had been after watching that Oakfern go.
She saw Rhinestone check on her daughter, she felt really cold against her but she hoped that the fire did her good, and a smile grew on her face when the blood bay stag started licking the filly’s dark coat to help her warm up. Suddenly she decided that Rhinestone will make a very good father.

“...I’m sorry for… you know...pulling you” she said sheepishly after a moment. While she had not hurt him by doing so it was probably not a fun thing to be pulled by a pregnant doe.

Skyla

The young filly had blacked out for a moment. At first she had been next to her mother then suddenly she was laying down near a nice warm fire, both her mother and Rhinestone next to her. Her eyes stared at the flames that had started to warm her up even though she was still shivering a little. Fire. She liked the fire. It didn’t burn or drag her around.
She blinked when she felt someone lick her fur up backwards and turned to see Rhinestone doing the deed. It was a weird feeling since only her mother had done so before, still it felt nice and it dried her from the water that had been stuck in her coat. The small filly didn’t know what to say but she leaned in into the touch of the stag.

‘Is this what it feels like to have a dad?’she thought.

She had never met her real father, but it felt nice. She liked being like this. With her family around her.

Rhinestone

Rhine continued to lick the seal bay filly’s coat backwards and with each stroke he felt it beginning to dry. He was glad that she seemed to be ok and that she hadn’t gone into shock or hypothermia- atleast from what he could see. The tough little filly was going to be alright.

The stag felt the fawn lean into his touch and he also felt himself relax, eyelids feeling a little bit on the heavy side as he methodically licked the fawn’s fur. He was fading in and out of consciousness when Lyanna spoke again.

He lifted his head, looking at her with sleepy half-lidded eyes. “Oh, it’s fine.” he said, a small drowsy tone in his voice. “I’d already forgotten about it to be totally honest with you.” he gave her a small grin.

Lyanna

Lyanna chuckled at the stag’s drowsy tone. To be honest she was pretty tired too after that encounter, from the corner of her eye she could also see Skyla slowly closing and opening her eyes trying to stay awake.

“Best to sleep now, both of you” she smiled at her daughter who looked at her lazily for a moment, then she brushed Rhinestone’s muzzle with her own “Tomorrow we will see a herbalist about those burns, so get some rest”

The young doe then shifted a little to a more comfortable position and let her head rest on the ground near her daughter. She watched Rhinestone for a while before she felt sleep take over and closed her eyes. It felt right to be like this, like a family, she could get used to this. With a smile she let herself drift into sleep. Skyla following soon behind her.
