Year 761 of the new age, Spring
Silverthorne Silver Vale
Featuring: Raiden, Skyla and Tarian(NPC)

Skyla

The filly’s internal clock told her to wake up as the soft rays of sunlight began to fall upon their little clearing, giving it a pale green hue. A black ringed ear twitched before she snuggled up closer to her brother, whom she had wrapped around like a snake, mornings like these were so calm and she didn’t want to wake up. A small drop of dew fell off from a leaf on top of the fawns, falling right into her closed eyelid and waking her up with a slight jolt. With a yawn she looked around, not moving from her current position, she had been in this small clearing with her mother before Raiden was born and they moved in with Rhinestone but a few days before the buckskin and their great-grandmother had made them move in here again for apparently no reason. Adults were weird. Still heavy with sleep, her eyes traveled down to her brother’s sleeping form, he liked to snuggle up to her on cold nights, Tarian had said that a good level of body-heat ran in their family though Skyla had no idea what that meant. Another yawn escaped her and she let her head fall on top of Raiden’s messy mane before letting out a loud snore.

Raiden

Raiden was jerked from his sleep by a loud snore and something landing on his neck. Skyla? He normally ended up snuggled against the older fawn...she was warm and cozy, and his big sister - though he’d never outright admit that he loved her, he really did. But when he slept with Skyla they often ended up inadvertently waking each other up. Like now, for instance.

The young fawn pinned his ears back slightly as he eased his neck out from under Skyla’s head. With a yawn he blinked the sleep from his eyes and gazed around their new home. Mommy and Skyla told him they’d been here before but Raiden had been born after that, when mommy had met daddy. He wasn’t sure he liked it here yet; the clearing itself looked lovely enough, but he didn’t feel like he was home without daddy.

Raiden huffed when he found he couldn’t see his mother. She couldn’t have gone far, but still...it meant he had nobody to play with but Skyla, and the dark filly had gone back to sleep. The young colt gave a resigned sigh and promptly turned to shove his nose into his sister’s face.
“Skyla. Skyla!” He tried (and failed) to keep the impatience from his voice. She had woken him up, so now she could play with him. That was fair, right?

Skyla

The darkling snorted loudly, hiding her smirk in her brother’s mane, and snored yet again. It was fun to wake up Raiden this way, who said that he could enjoy the realm of dreams while she was awake.

“Too sleepy” she said in a mock-groggy voice “Must sleep”

Then she turned in such a way that she was almost crushing her brother into the soft grass with her belly to the sky and her tongue rolling out of her mouth in a comical manner. Still the younger fawn would have none of it and tried to get her off, normally this would fail but Skyla was still a bit small for her age and could not use her height or weight against him, so she decided not to torture her brother too much this morning.

“Fineeee~” she sighed dramatically “I’m up from my wondrous beauty sleep”

With a swift move she was off her brother and stretching. Again she looked around and stopped. Lyanna wasn’t in the clearing, and neither was Tarian.

“Where’s mom?” she asked out loud, not expecting Raiden to know but still feeling like needing to say it.Their mom was usually the one to wake them up, nuzzling them softly until the sleepiness was gone, and if that didn’t work then Tarian will find a way to literally scare them out of their sleep. Still they had both been acting strangely lately, but suddenly leaving them in the clearing like this made her weary.

Raiden

Raiden frowned as Skyle snored again and he opened his mouth to say something but -

Oof! Skyla knocked half the breath out of his lungs as she practically rolled on top of him.
“Argh! Skylaaaaa!” He half shouted, half gasped, his words muffled by the older fawn’s neck as he reached to bite her in retaliation. With a scowl Raiden squirmed as he tried to free himself of his sister’s weight while trying equally hard not to laugh at her funny face as he did so. Finally she relented and got up, freeing the young colt. He threw her a mock dirty look and stuck out his tongue as she stretched.

Almost immediately after, he sensed something off about Skyla and quickly scrambled to his feet. Her question confirmed it, and Raiden looked about himself with a frown on his dark face.
“I dunno,” He said pointlessly. “Tarien’s not here either,” He added...equally pointlessly. Skyla obviously knew that already. They’d have both known it if the older doe was - Raiden hated being woken up by her! At least mommy was nice when it came to getting up...Tarien was harsh and sometimes downright scary!

As soon as Skyla had noticed their mother was gone, Raiden began to feel worry gnawing away in his stomach. If Skyla had paused then mommy not being here was bad, right? Childish fear enhanced the anxiety he felt already.
“Skyla...I wants mommy. I wants daddy!” He stated firmly, trying not to be too loud and failing miserably. “Let’s go find them! I wants to find them!” He said, nudging Skyla in the flank before bounding forwards a few steps.

Skyla

She tried not to roll her eyes and fought back the urge to correct her younger brother as he spoke. While he was getting better at sentences there were still a few mistakes, ones that Skyla herself had made before, but right now it wasn’t the time to teach him the proper sentence.

“Relax” she said, trying to keep her voice neutral, she was a bit nervous too, last time she had been left alone an Oakfern had almost drowned her. “Hey, remember what Gran taught us? To sniff at the air for scents? Let’s try and find them with it.”

With that she began to take little sniffs, her nose high like she had seen the blind doe do when she was looking for something, Lyanna did the same too but her nose barely needed to move in order to do that. Skyla didn’t know why. She could smell something..humid, probably the dew, and what she remembered was her mother’s scent was all over the glade along with Tarian’s except hers was stronger. That must mean Gran was closer. With that in mind Skyla nudged her brother.

“Come on”

She began to follow the blind doe’s scent through the clearing, one ear back to make sure Raiden was following. Lyanna’s scent smelled of fire, and warmth and peace, Tarian’s scent was stronger, like the Winter Flame and fitted in with any surroundings they were in, always changing as if hiding. The young darkling took careful steps as they stepped out of the glade and into the trees, her ears almost ringing trying to find any tiny movement as she followed her graddam’s scent. A dark figure stood not far from them now, a Fawnling staring out into the distance, Skyla recognized the dark coat and the off-white spots.

“There’s Gran”

Raiden

Raiden tried to do as Skyla said, but it was difficult when he was so nervous, and he could tell she was a little bit worried too. Normally he would have teased her for being a scaredy cat (he had an excuse, he was still little - she was older than him!) but this time he was so worried himself, he didn’t say anything.

“Oh, I can do that!” He declared when Skyla began sniffing. The little colt raised his head too, and began to sniff the air. He could hardly smell mommy, but gran? He could smell gran! Skyla obviously could too, because she looked more relaxed - and sure enough the older fawn told him to follow her. Happier now, Raiden briefly pinned his ears back at Skyla’s nudge and followed her into the forest.

It wasn’t long before Skyla paused in her steps, and Raiden followed her line of sight to a dark figure some way away.
“Gran?” He said, absent-mindedly flicking his tail into Skyla’s rump. Deciding it definitely was his grandmother, Raiden perked up and pranced forward, wheeling round to half-face his big sister.
“Let’s go, Skyla!” He said, stamping his hooves into the ground and wagging his tail playfully, trying to provoke Skyla into chasing him. The little colt forgot how dangerous going through the forest alone could be, and focused entirely on wanting to race his sister through the winding trees.

Skyla

”Let’s go, Skyla!”

The filly wanted to chase her brother, to race him like they had done many times before, but something stopped her. The old doe in front of them had one ear flicked back, she knew they were there then, but she wasn’t turning and an odd air hung around her. Skyla walked past her brother slowly, a worried look in her eyes until she stopped next to the blind doe. As she looked into the distance her eyes were oddly blank. Skyla looked back to make sure Raiden had followed before putting her attention on Tarian again.

“Gran? Is something wrong?”

No response and Skyla’s hairs on the back of her neck went up, she disliked it when the old doe was so quiet, it reminded her of a soldier when preparing for danger.

“Gran…” she looked at Raiden then back “Where’s momma?”

Finally the doe sighed, almost as if annoyed, and turned her white eyes towards them. Skyla always wondered how she could see at all when her eyes were like that, even Luan who had been blind had needed help to see.

“Skyla, Raiden” Tarian said quietly, a rare thing to happen “Your mother has decided to take a small trip away from here. Something happened you see...and if she stayed any longer it would have torn her apart.”

The silence that followed was almost deafening, she let them think, let them make their own conclusions, gave them time to ask any questions. Skyla was having trouble shaking her mind out of the sudden numbness.

Raiden

Raiden huffed as Skyla ignored his attempts at playing but quickly sobered up once he read the anxiety in her body language. What was wrong? And now he thought of it, why was Gran so quiet? Laying his ears back in concern, Raiden bounded after Skyla and came to a halt beside her, as their Gran turned her head to look at them through milky eyes.

Raiden didn’t like Tarien’s eyes; they scared him a little. Still, he wagged his tail slightly in the hope that Tarien would say something to dispel their worry.

She didn’t.

Momma was gone?! Raiden’s eyes widened in shock; he had never been without his mother for long, ever. He quickly wrapped his silvery tail around Skyla’s side, subconsciously reassuring himself that at least he had his sister. Whereas the older fawn was staying quiet and thinking things through herself Raiden was full of questions that his little mind couldn’t answer by itself.

“Mommy’s gone?! Gone on a trip where? When will she be back? Can we see her ‘gain soon?” He flung the questions out so fast he began to lose some of the proper pronounciation his parents had drilled into him from the moment he learned to form words.

Skyla

The young filly let her brother’s questions fly, though she somehow felt she knew the answer to a few of them.

“Yes, Raiden, she’s gone” Tarian answered softly “She went on a trip to find herself and I don’t know when she’ll be back...but it might not be as soon as you think. But she will come back, we just have to wait until she’s ready. You’ll be in my care until she does.”

Skyla didn’t care. While Tarian could be strict and a bit rough she was still a good grand-dam. All that went through the filly’s mind was one question.

“Why?” her voice sounded odd to her own ears. Why did her mother decide to leave? What had happened that day when she came back all cold and sad?

“That…” the old doe stopped as if not knowing what to say and looked away “Something happened, little one, adult stuff. There was no helping it, but Lyanna was hit hard by it and needs time for herself.” Tarian turned and kneeled down to match their sizes better, her white eyes staring somewhere in-between them both.

“Your mother loves you both” she started “But she was too young to be a mom, you might not understand this yet but she was, because of this she didn’t have time to grow up herself-”

“So it’s our fault?” Skyla interrupted an unknown feeling settling in her stomach.

“No” the old Firebringer shook her head “It’s nobody’s fault. She’ll be back, but we need to be patient for her.”

Again Skyla felt at loss, she felt as if she understood half of what Tarian was saying while missing the other half completely and even what she understood was a blur. She lowered her head as her thoughts raced endlessly.

“Why?” she muttered

Raiden

The little colt frowned as he mulled over Tariel’s words. Mommy wouldn’t just go like that would she? Without saying goodbye? But Skyla and Tarien’s expressions both told him that was exactly what she’d done. He listened mutely while Tarien and Skyla spoke.

Skyla spoke the truth. Tarien said mommy still loved them and it wasn’t their fault she’d gone, but it had to be….or they would have gone with her. Right?
“If it isn’t our fault why didn’t she take us?” He whined. Tarien explained that she would look after Skyla and him while mommy was gone but Raiden didn’t want that. He wanted mommy. She should look after him, not gran!

“I don’t wanna stay with you! I want my mommy!” He pinned his ears flat back and shouted at the old doe as loud as he could, because he was angry that she had gone and angry that Tarien had let her and angry that he couldn’t do anything about it. Fuelled by his sudden anger Raiden reared up slightly and slammed his little hooves into the ground as hard as he could. Suddenly it was as though all his rage was expelled with the force of the movement. Now he found himself feeling numb, sad and extremely tired all at once, despite having only recently woken up.

“I’m sorry, grandma,” He murmured, hanging his head in shame at having shouted at the doe that, for all her scary moments, had done her best by them and looked after them well. “Shouting is rude...I was rude.” He recited as if he had learned his mother and father’s lectures about manners off by heart. “I’m sorry! I just want mommy here now,” He whined softly.

Skyla

“I know” Tarian said to Raiden, he was only a young fawn just weaned that wanted his mother and she didn’t hold his anger against him. “But she needs to do this alone, Raiden, taking you with her might have been dangerous. Besides Rhinestone might have missed you too, if you had gone you wouldn’t have been able to see your daddy now would you?” she angled her head to nuzzle the young fawn, Skyla felt as if there was something more but right now she was too shocked, too tired to ask about it.

“She will come back” Tarian said again “She might even come visit from time to time. But we must be patient”

The old doe raised her tail, beckoning them both to a hug, to comfort them both. Skyla waited until Raiden snuggled up to her chest before doing the same, lightly squishing her brother between them. There was nothing she could do was there? Her mother was gone, and they had no idea when she’d be back. Now it was her turn to help Tarian and care for Raiden...but…Tears began to spill even when she shut her eyes closed and buried her head into Raiden’s snowy locks.

I want my mommy

Raiden

At the mention of his daddy Raiden calmed a little; the little colt worshipped his sire. The suggestion that his mother might come back sometimes was better than being told she wasn't coming back at all. He gratefully accepted the old doe's nuzzle, secretly glad she was here for them.

Then he found himself drawn into a hug, which he threw himself into, burying his head in Tarien's shoulder and pressing his side into Skyla.

He would miss his mommy. But he had no idea what he could do about it beyond running away to find her...but that would mean leaving daddy and Skyla and Tarien. He didn’t want to go without them. So he muffled his sobs in Tarien’s shoulder and remembered what his mommy and daddy had told him about being strong and brave.

He would be strong and brave, for himself and Skyla.
Skyla and Raiden's reaction to Lyanna leaving :) thanks a lot for this rp templarknight94 :dummy:

Just in case: charge is a word normally used in old times referring to a person(usually a child) that someone needed to take care of. Usually it was a son or daughter but this word was normally used when the child of a friend or relative was given to one to take care of because the parent wasn't able to. Kindal ike adoptive child but not in a way :) So now Skyla and Raiden are Tarian's charges because Lyanna's gone.

Neither fawn gets any stat as they didnt do much XD

Skyla belongs to me

Raiden belongs to templarknight94
